Come learn nonviolent de-escalation techniques for successful demonstrations!
Protests, rallies, festivals, and other community events are important ways to assert our values and visions, to lift our voices to say NO, to call out demands, and to be in community with our people. An action can pressure a decision-maker or express liberation and possibility. Demonstrations are part of a time-tested strategy of using active nonviolence and community-building to shift power so we can transform systems of violence and oppression.
Peacekeepers are trained demonstrators who accept responsibility for the flow and tone of an action. They help create safer, more effective demonstrations by defusing conflict, maintaining nonviolent discipline, and ensuring the action reflects our collective goals.
In this Peacekeeper Training, you’ll learn principles and guidelines of nonviolence in action, along with key techniques to defuse and de-escalate potentially volatile situations. We’ll cover safety planning for protests and events—including how to respond to possible ICE or police presence—and walk through how PJALS organizes our volunteer team of Peacekeepers. Together, we’ll practice skills in real-life scenarios to build confidence and readiness.
After successfully completing the training, volunteers are eligible to join the PJALS Peacekeeper Team if they choose. Everyone who attends will leave with practical skills that strengthen not only our demonstrations but also our everyday lives.
