Supporting Immigrants, Racial Justice, and Criminal Justice Reforms
Last year’s member survey showed broad member support for supporting immigrants and criminal justice reform and resulted in these two issues being a part of our priorities during 2018-2019. We have recently done some restructuring of our committees to provide better opportunities for our members to get engaged in this important work as part of our Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ) Committee.
This committee will continue to focus on supporting communities and organizations led by people of color and strengthening the skills of our white members to act as racial justice allies. We are currently working in coalition with impacted communities to support immigrants and advance criminal justice reforms including police accountability.
Our immigration work includes a legal defense fund for immigrants, Know Your Rights work focusing on the Greyhound Station, and organizing to win policy changes to Ban ICE and CBP from non-public spaces.
Our criminal justice reform work continues to focus on ending mass incarceration and racial disparities, reducing barriers to reentry, and advancing accountability of law enforcement.
If you would like to get involved in this work, now is the perfect time to get engaged by joining our Showing Up for Racial Justice Committee.
Our Showing Up for Racial Justice Committee meets on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month at 5:30 pm in the Community Building, 35 W. Main.
