Donald Trump ordered the assassination of a top commander in Iran‘s Revolutionary Guards Corps, Major General Qassim Suleimani.
Make no mistake, this is an illegal and unconstitutional act of war, with no consultation or authorization from Congress. This is a profoundly dangerous escalation that will embolden hardliners and could lead to war with Iran.
Remember, the U.S. Constitution states that only Congress has the power to declare and authorize war, yet they’ve abrogated this responsibility for years. Trump’s unilateral act of war is a result of Congress’ lack of accountability.
Action #1: Contact our elected officials TODAY!
Demand that they do everything in their power to stop yet another misguided U.S. war in the Middle East.
Call the local offices:
- Senator Patty Murray: 624-9515 (see Murray’s good statement here)
- Senator Maria Cantwell: 353-2507
- Representative Cathy McMorris-Rodgers: 353-2374
Here’s a suggested script:
Hello, my name is ______________ and I’m a constituent from ( your hometown ). I’m calling to urge Senator/Representative________
War with Iran would be an unmitigated disaster. Experts have estimated that the lives lost and financial costs could surpass the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq COMBINED. It’s time for Congress to step up with its constitutional authority and block the Trump administration from any further escalating acts of war.
Action #2: No War on Iran! Demonstration
Saturday January 4, 12:00
Division and Wellesley, Spokane, WA
Come show you oppose Trump’s war on Iran!
Trump’s air strike is an act of war, thousands of people could die, and the people of Iran are not our enemies. Timed to distract from impeachment or warmongering, it could spark a world war. Let’s show up strong together!
