Keynote Speaker Favianna Rodriguez is an interdisciplinary artist, cultural organizer, and activist based out of Oakland, CA; she is well known for using her art as a tool for activism on a larger scale. Her designs and projects focus on a wide variety of social issues ranging from immigration to interdependence and everything in between. Rodriguez is involved in various advocacy groups including, but not limited to, Presente.org and Culture Strike, in which she is the Executive Director. Rodriguez was recently featured in a documentary series titled Migration is Beautiful, which addressed how artists responded to failed immigrant policies in the United States.

3:30 Favianna Rodriguez Special Workshop – Limited to 50 – We will end the day with a workshop by Favianna Rodriguez titled “Reproduce and Revolt.” There has never been a movement for social change without art and culture being central to that movement. Art can inspire, educate, and help spur the imagination beyond the realms of what politics can do. Favianna Rodriguez will talk about her art practice creating powerful and unapologetic art pieces. She will also discuss how artists around the country are organizing around racial justice and migrant rights and shifting public sentiment.
EVENT ORGANIZERS: Each year the International Women’s Day planning committee is comprised of multiple members of various organizations, universities, and businesses throughout Spokane and surrounding areas. This year’s committee includes representatives from Eastern Washington University Women’s and Gender Studies Program, YWCA Spokane, Spokane Woman’s Club, Planned Parenthood of Greater Washington and North Idaho, Lutheran Community Services Northwest, Center for Justice, Peace and Justice Action League, Spokane Area NOW, Spokane Community College, Whitworth University, Salish School, Washington CAN, Gonzaga University Multicultural Education Center, Gonzaga University LGBT Resource Center, Spokane Women Together, Transitions, as well as many individuals.
