Nonviolence in Action: Peacekeeping & De-Escalation Skills for Protests & Events

Protests, rallies, festivals, and other community events are powerful ways to assert our values and visions. They create space to lift our voices—to say no, to name our demands, and to be in community with one another.

Demonstrations are part of a long, time-tested strategy rooted in active nonviolence and community-building. These actions can apply pressure to decision-makers while also expressing visions of liberation and possibility.

Peacekeepers play a vital role in making these spaces possible. They are trained demonstrators who help guide the flow and tone of an action, supporting safety, coordination, and collective care.

In this Peacekeeper Training, you will learn the core principles and guidelines of nonviolence in action. The training includes:

  • Techniques to de-escalate and defuse potentially volatile situations
  • Strategies for maintaining safety at protests and community events
  • Guidance on navigating potential ICE or police presence
  • An overview of how PJALS organizes and supports its Peacekeeper team

Participants will also have the opportunity to practice these skills together in real-time scenarios.

After successfully completing the training, participants are eligible to join the PJALS Peacekeeper Team if they choose. These skills are not only valuable in movement spaces—they are tools you can carry into everyday life.
