Yes on Prop 2 – Requiring safety measures for coal and oil transport
If passed, Prop 2 would amend the Spokane Municipal Code to make it a class 1 civil infraction for any person or entity to allow a rail car that it owns to ship uncontained coal and some types of oil by rail through the downtown Spokane core, or within 2,000 feet of a school, hospital, or the Spokane River.
This proposition does not ban coal and oil trains from going through Spokane but does require coal and oil companies to make the transportation of their product safer. It would require coal and oil companies to reduce the flammability of Bakken crude oil prior to shipment and covering coal rail cars.

As a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, PJALS does not take any position on candidates but we can ask questions of all candidates. We partnered with other Smart Justice Spokane member organizations to gather information from all Spokane and Spokane Valley city council candidates and all local judicial candidates on criminal justice issues.
