The Peace and Justice Action League of Spokane (PJALS) is now accepting applications for our Steering Committee—our primary leadership and decision-making body. We invite current PJALS members to consider stepping into this role to help guide our organization as we work to engage everyday people to build a just and nonviolent world.

Founded in 1975, PJALS is an independent, membership-based organization rooted in community organizing and leadership development. Our work advances peace, economic justice, and human rights through campaigns grounded in the intersections of these values. We prioritize youth engagement and leadership, cultivate strong partnerships with communities of color, LGBTQ+ communities, faith communities, and other progressive bases, and work to share our message widely while delivering high-quality, people-powered organizing.

The Steering Committee functions as PJALS’ board equivalent and is responsible for strategic direction, organizational health, and shared leadership. The current Steering Committee is made up of six members and is seeking to fill five open seats, building toward a full committee of eleven.

Our Vision for Leadership

We are committed to building a leadership body that is:

  • Multiracial
  • Intergenerational
  • Cross-class
  • Centered in the leadership of people directly impacted by the issues we work on, alongside values-aligned allies

Our goals include maintaining a Steering Committee where a majority of members are directly impacted by our priority issues and at least 30% of members are people of color.

What We Value

PJALS believes that everyday people can accomplish extraordinary things together. Our work is guided by an intersectional racial equity lens, shared power and decision-making, and a commitment to calling one another in—not out—as we learn and grow together. We strive to create a culture of respect, curiosity, accountability, and collaboration, supported by clear community agreements and strong relationships.
