Nonviolent Direct Action Training: What Activists & Organizers Need to Know Now

This training is designed to prepare you—whether as a formal or informal leader, or as an individual participant—to engage effectively in mass mobilization and direct action in our community.

Through this hands-on workshop, participants will learn practical strategies and best practices for building a strong, people-powered movement for immigrant rights, multiracial democracy, and racial and economic justice. Together, we will explore how to plan and carry out nonviolent direct actions that are grounded, strategic, and aligned with our shared goals.

The training will include:

  • Building toward effective mass mobilization
  • Strategies and tactics for nonviolent direct action
  • De-escalation and noncompliance techniques
  • Tools for assessing risk and choosing your role in an action

Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of the choices and potential consequences involved in different tactics, and how to apply them in ways that strengthen our movements.

After this training, participants will:

  • Understand the roles, risks, legal considerations, and best practices of civil resistance and nonviolent direct action
  • Differentiate between key concepts such as civil disobedience, civil resistance, nonviolent direct action, and noncooperation
  • Learn techniques for staying focused on action goals and remaining calm under pressure
  • Gain tools to assess risk and determine how they want to participate in an action

This training is co-presented by Spokane Community Against Racism (SCAR) and the Peace & Justice Action League of Spokane (PJALS).

There is no cost to attend. Optional contributions will help cover workshop expenses, with any remaining funds shared between SCAR and PJALS.

Join us as we build the skills, clarity, and collective power needed to take meaningful action together.
