Certain politicians exploit racist rhetoric to divide and distract, while they rig government and the economy for themselves and their big money donors. They get richer, we get poorer—and the power of government is turned against communities of color.

But we can fight back and win! Together, we are rejecting messages of racism, fear, and division from the reactionary rich to join together with people from all walks of life, so we can ensure all our communities get good housing and better schools, not more barbwire — and more jobs, not more jails!

Everyday people have the power to accomplish extraordinary things together. PJALS builds a multi-racial, cross-class intergenerational, all-gender, rural-urban, bottom-up movement centered on the leadership of impacted people.

Spokane County Against Racism (SCAR)

Spokane Community Against Racism (SCAR) is a multi-faceted community organization focused on ending systemic racism in Spokane County and the surrounding region. We do everything from direct outreach to answering national calls to action, and have participated in local and statewide legislative advocacy. We create spaces for community engagement to build multiracial, cross-class solidarity, and are currently gathering input on the Platform For Change–a holistic vision of community safety and wellness for Spokane.

Spectrum Center Spokane

Spectrum Center creates and LGBTQIA2S+ community that is safe, intersectional, & intergenerational. We celebrate resilient, healthy community through social connectedness & support, arts & culture, access to resources, and leadership development.

We do many things, including giving away free gender affirming products and gear through our GAP Program, advocating for the needs of LGBTQIA2S+ people on the local and state level, sponsoring and sharing art from queer artists, holding free vaccine clinics, and overall working towards the liberation, safety, and happening, safety, and happiness of queer people in Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho.

Raíz of Planned Parenthood of Greater Washington and North Idaho

The word “raíz” is Spanish for “root.” The program’s name grew out of a conversation that organizers had about the meaning of the work out in the field. To work closely with a community and to fully understand where issues come from and how to tackle them, you have to start from the root.

The core of Raíz is grassroots community organizing in Latinx communities around issues of reproductive health and justice. Raíz is intersectional in its work and provides volunteers and members opportunities for leadership and action across various issues, including comprehensive sex education, voter registration, immigration, environmental justice, and equal pay.

Raíz is about more than just health. It’s about justice, knowledge, and power. This program is an integral part of giving people of color resources for their health, while also recognizing that humans are not one-issue individuals. The person who needs an abortion may also fear deportation. Organizers focusing on Latinx outreach must recognize these experiences and make it an integral part of their work. Raíz teams work with Latinx youth as well as their families, uplifting their voices and experiences, en inglés y en español, to sow seeds for a collective change.

Planned Parenthood of Greater Washington and North Idaho

Planned Parenthood of Greater Washington and North Idaho is a nonprofit sexual and reproductive health care provider that respects and protects every person’s right to make their own informed health care decisions — no matter who you are, where you live, or who you love.

As the state’s leading provider of high-quality, affordable sexual and reproductive health care, we offer compassionate care, backed by medical experts, at eleven (11) health centers across the state.

Health Center Advocacy Program (HCAP) volunteers are a driving force in our effort to educate patients and health center visitors. By working inside our health center waiting rooms, HCAP volunteers connect with the full range of individuals who use Planned Parenthood services, and provide these supporters and patients with a range of ways to get involved in advocating for their reproductive health and rights.

Public Affairs Advocacy volunteers take part in community outreach and tabling, collect petitions, canvass, data entry, and many other public affairs activities. As an Advocacy Volunteer member, you will receive regular trainings and briefings to become an informed public affairs specialist.

Resident Action Program

Resident Action Project (RAP) is a program of the Washington Low Income Housing Alliance (WLIHA) and the Washington Housing Alliance Action Fund. Our work is supported by the Center for Community Change. RAP is a statewide network in Washington led by people wholive in low-income housing, have experienced housing injustice, instability, and/or homelessness. As well as nonprofit and direct service staff.

Together, we are building power to change local and state policy through storytelling, organizing, and civic engagement. We know that too many of the people with this lived-experience are Black, Indigenous, and persons of color (BIPOC), people who identify as LGBTQIA2S+, people with disabilities, immigrants & refugee, older adults, veterans, and single parent families, just to name a few. We also know that housing is also part of a larger system of oppression we are trying to dismantle in our organizing work.
