Peacekeeping & De-Escalation Skills for Protests & Events

Protests, rallies, festivals, and other community gatherings are powerful ways to assert our values, raise our voices, and build collective power. Demonstrations are part of a long, time-tested strategy of active nonviolence and community-building to shift power and challenge systems of violence and oppression.

Peacekeepers are trained demonstrators who help set the tone of an action and support the safety and flow of the event. In this Peacekeeper Training, participants will learn core principles and guidelines of nonviolence in action, along with practical de-escalation techniques for navigating potentially volatile situations.

The training will cover:

  • Principles of nonviolence in action
  • De-escalation strategies and grounding techniques
  • Planning for safety at protests and events
  • How to navigate situations involving potential ICE or police presence
  • How the PJALS Peacekeeper Team is organized

Participants will also have time to practice these skills together so you can feel more prepared and confident showing up in community spaces.

After successfully completing the training, volunteers are eligible to join the PJALS Peacekeeper Team if they choose. These skills aren’t just useful at demonstrations — they’re tools you can carry into everyday life, from conflict de-escalation to community care.
