trans* flagI was shocked and saddened to learn of the physical attack on a trans* woman on West Main on Friday night, sending her to the hospital. An attack anywhere is unacceptable but I find myself especially troubled by an attack taking place across the street from our offices and in a business whose owners have gone out of their way to support equality, the freedom to marry, and the recognition of everyone’s full humanity.

Peace and Justice Action League of Spokane joins our community’s good wishes for the victim’s quick recovery and full well-being. We also join the call for a full investigation and for the perpetrators to be brought to justice quickly.

Media reports have included witness descriptions of slurs against the victim’s gender and sexuality. As a community we must strongly reject all bias-motivated violence and the environment of fear and intimidation which it helps create.

Trans* people are valued members of our community and have a long history of courage and leadership in speaking out for equality and liberation, which is to be emulated and admired. Everyone deserves to experience dignity and respect on every block and in every neighborhood and situation. We stand in strong support of Spokane’s trans* community.
